Facebook Ads Getting Clicks but No Sales? 9 Things to Check

Quick answer

When Facebook ads get clicks but no sales, the cause is usually one of three things: the sale is happening but not being tracked, the campaign is buying the wrong kind of click, or the store loses people between the ad and the checkout. Check them in that order, because a broken Purchase event makes every other number look wrong. Start in Events Manager, then your campaign settings, then your own store on a phone.

Why are my Facebook ads getting clicks but no conversions?

Clicks only prove the ad is interesting. Work through this list from top to bottom and stop when you find a break:

  1. Purchase tracking through the Pixel and Conversions API
  2. The optimisation event and campaign objective
  3. Where the ad sends people
  4. How the store behaves inside the Facebook and Instagram in app browser
  5. Mobile page speed
  6. Whether add to cart is visible without scrolling
  7. Price, shipping and fee surprises at checkout
  8. Low quality placements or traffic
  9. The offer and trust signals

How do I check that my Pixel and Conversions API are tracking purchases?

  1. Open Events Manager, choose your Pixel or dataset, and look at the Purchase event. Check when it last fired and whether it shows both browser and server as sources.
  2. Open the Test Events tab and place a real test order on your store. Meta's help center says test server events usually appear within about 30 seconds.
  3. Confirm the Purchase event carries a value and currency. Without them, ROAS cannot be reported.
  4. If you send the same Purchase from both the Pixel and the Conversions API, Meta's developer documentation says each copy needs the same event name and event ID so Meta can deduplicate them.

The fix: reconnect your store's Meta sales channel or tracking app, then repeat the test order until one clean Purchase with value appears.

Is my campaign optimising for the wrong event?

If a campaign optimises for link clicks, Meta finds people who click a lot, who are often not the people who buy.

  1. In Ads Manager, open the campaign and check the objective. For an online store it should normally be Sales.
  2. Open the ad set and check the conversion event. It should be Purchase, not Add to cart or Landing page views, unless you have too few purchases to optimise for.
  3. Check placements with Breakdown, then By delivery, then Placement. If one placement brings lots of cheap clicks and no purchases, that traffic is the likely problem. Where your account still allows placement controls, test removing it.

The fix: move budget into a Sales campaign optimised for Purchase, and judge ads on purchases and ROAS, not click through rate.

Why do people click my ad but never add to cart?

Do these four checks on your own phone.

  1. Landing page mismatch. If the ad shows one product and the link goes to your homepage, the shopper has to search for it. Most will not. Send each ad to the exact product it shows.
  2. The in app browser. Tap your own ad inside the Facebook app and again inside Instagram. Both open your store in a built in browser, not Safari or Chrome. Add a product to cart and go all the way to the payment step. Look for pop ups that will not close or express payment buttons that fail.
  3. Mobile page speed. Run the product page through Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Think with Google research found that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load. That study is from 2017, so treat it as a guide. Compress large images and remove apps you no longer use.
  4. Add to cart below the fold. On a phone, the price and the add to cart button should be visible without scrolling.

Why do shoppers add to cart and then leave?

  1. Price or shipping surprises. Baymard Institute's research found that when "just browsing" is set aside, 40% of US shoppers who abandoned a cart did so because extra costs like shipping, tax and fees were too high. Show shipping costs and delivery times on the product page, before checkout.
  2. Trust. In the same Baymard data, 19% abandoned because they did not trust the site with their card details, and 17% because the site had errors or crashed. Add clear returns information, real reviews and contact details.
  3. The offer itself. If the price is above similar products and nothing explains why, people look and leave. Make the reason to buy clear on the page.

How do I check whether this is hurting my own sales?

Do not rely on Meta's numbers alone. For the same date range:

  1. Count real orders in your store admin that came from Facebook or Instagram, using UTM tags or your store's sales by channel report.
  2. Compare sessions from Meta in your store analytics with link clicks in Ads Manager. A big gap points to slow pages or the in app browser losing people before the page loads.
  3. Work out ROAS from real orders: revenue from those orders divided by ad spend. If store orders exist but Ads Manager shows none, the problem is tracking. If neither shows sales, the problem is the campaign or the store.

  • Baymard found 40% of US shoppers who abandoned a cart, excluding those just browsing, cited extra costs like shipping, tax and fees.
  • In the same Baymard data, 19% cited not trusting the site with card details and 17% cited site errors or crashes.
  • Think with Google research from 2017 found 53% of mobile visits are abandoned if a page takes longer than 3 seconds to load.
  • Meta's help center says test server events usually appear in the Test Events tool within about 30 seconds.

FAQ

Should I turn off Facebook ads that get clicks but no sales?

Not until you have checked tracking, because a broken Purchase event makes good ads look bad. Once tracking is confirmed, pause ads that keep spending with no purchases while similar ads do sell.

Does the Instagram in app browser hurt sales?

It could. Some pop ups and express payment buttons behave differently there. Tap your own ad and try to complete an order on iPhone and Android to find out.

Why does Ads Manager show fewer purchases than Events Manager?

Jon Loomer explains that Events Manager shows raw totals before deduplication, while Ads Manager only counts deduplicated purchases it can attribute to your ads. It will almost always be lower.
