Meta Removed Detailed Targeting. Here’s the 2026 Replacement Playbook.

Quick answer

Meta removed detailed targeting (interests, behaviors and detailed demographics) from ad set targeting in January 2026, leaving geography, age, gender, language and Custom or Lookalike audiences. For Meta ads, the replacement is creative that tells Andromeda who the ad is for, clean Conversions API signal, and growing first-party data for custom audiences. It is not simpler than interest stacking, just different and harder work.

Detailed targeting was the interest, behavior and demographic stack that defined Meta media buying for a decade. It went away in January 2026.

Meta didn't bury the announcement; it had been signalling the change since the Andromeda rollout in mid-2025. Still, the actual deprecation date caught a lot of operators flat-footed, and the habit of stacking interests is still alive in plenty of accounts.

The replacement isn't simpler. It is harder, just different.

What exactly did Meta remove?

You can no longer add interests, behaviors or detailed demographics in the ad set targeting layer. The targeting input collapsed to geography, age (where legal), gender (where legal), language, and Custom or Lookalike audiences.

Custom audiences from your own data (email lists, Pixel events, video viewers) still work. Lookalikes built from those still work.

Broad targeting still exists, and under Andromeda it is the default rather than the fallback.

What's gone is stacking "interested in yoga + parents + earns over $75k + recently engaged" to triangulate a buyer. The auction engine doesn't use those inputs anymore.

What replaces detailed targeting on Meta?

Three skills replace the interest-stacking craft.

Creative-driven sorting. Your ads now do the targeting. Andromeda reads what you're selling and what the creative communicates, then routes accordingly.

If your ad reads "for tired moms running on coffee," the system sorts toward tired moms running on coffee without you typing anything. Creative briefing is now targeting, and bad creative briefing is the new bad targeting.

Signal hygiene. This means the Conversions API with full server-side event coverage, deduplicated against the Pixel, fed through a clean schema with customer information for matching (email, phone, first name, last name, click ID, IP).

Teams that haven't built this in 2026 are running on noticeably weaker signal than teams that have.

Custom audience inputs. First-party data became more valuable, not less. Hashed customer file uploads, purchasers in the last 180 days and high-LTV cohorts still drive Lookalike strength, one of the few non-broad targeting inputs that survived.

Why did the change hit small advertisers hardest?

The end of interest targeting hit small advertisers hardest. The system didn't stop working; they had relied on interest stacks to compensate for thin first-party data and low creative volume.

Big brands had clean Conversions API setups, large customer files and creative teams shipping many variations a week, so the Andromeda transition was relatively smooth.

Small operators relying on "moms 25 to 44 interested in skincare" had nothing to fall back on when that lever disappeared. The honest assessment of 2026: small-account Meta performance got harder, not easier, even as the system got smarter.

How do I rebuild a Meta account without detailed targeting?

  1. Audit the creative. If you're running fewer than 10 unique active ads with real angle variation, you're not giving the system enough to sort with. Treat that as a practical floor, not an official Meta number.
  2. Fix the Conversions API. Many accounts have the Pixel plus a half-implemented Conversions API. The fix is full server-side event coverage with deduplication. Shopify's Conversions API app is close to one click, and Stape.io covers most non-Shopify stacks.
  3. Build first-party data. Email capture, purchase history and post-purchase surveys all grow your custom audience size. This is the only targeting lever left that the auction will see.

The reason most small accounts struggle now is operational. Producing a steady flow of fresh creative, keeping Conversions API hygiene and running structured tests requires skills most small teams can't hire.

Key facts

  • Meta removed interests, behaviors and detailed demographics from ad set targeting in January 2026.
  • Remaining targeting inputs are geography, age, gender, language, and Custom or Lookalike audiences.
  • Broad targeting is now the default under Andromeda, with creative doing much of the sorting.
  • Custom audiences from email lists, Pixel events and video viewers still work, as do Lookalikes built from them.
  • Small advertisers were hit hardest because they leaned on interest stacks to offset thin data and low creative volume.

FAQ

Can I still use interest targeting on Meta ads?

No. Since January 2026 you can't add interests, behaviors or detailed demographics at the ad set level. You can still use geography, age, gender, language, Custom audiences and Lookalikes.

What does Meta use instead of interests to find buyers?

Andromeda reads your creative and your conversion signal to decide who sees each ad. The message, visuals and angle of the ad effectively become your targeting.

Do Lookalike audiences still work?

Yes. Lookalikes built from customer files, purchasers and other first-party sources survived, which makes growing your first-party data more valuable.
